Under one month for sole traders to fill in pre-completed tax return
Sole traders, farmers and their spouses will have received their pre-completed tax returns in MyTax in the last week of February.
The tax filing due date for these groups is 1 April. Others will receive their pre-completed tax returns from mid-March onwards, with due dates later in April.
In addition to a pre-completed tax return, sole traders must also file a business tax return. The due date for both is 1 April.
The Tax Administration says that the business tax return must also be filed, even if the business did not operate at all last year.
“A sole trader’s tax return is based on accounting, so the accounts must be completed before the tax return is completed. However, the accounts are not appended to the tax return. If necessary, the Tax Administration will request more detailed information about the accounts,” Senior Taxation Specialist Nikke Jokitie says in a Tax Administration bulletin.
The Tax Administration deducts previous years’ losses and the business-owner tax credit automatically.
Farmers must file, in addition to their personal pre-completed tax return, a farmer tax return. Most farmers also receive a forestry tax return. The due date for all of them is 1 April. The farmer tax return must be filed even if the farmer did not farm at all in 2024.
